Our second unit was about change. I developed my idea of flowers wilting through watching a stop motion about decay and death in humans. I liked the idea of growth and decay, but I didn't want to draw dead people, so I focused on different life forms. I wanted to show a flower's life span, from beginning to end, in order. Therefore, I drew four different roses in different stages of life, from fresh new bud to wrinkly, old, and wilted.
I feel like my piece was successful, however, it turned out a bit different than expected. I initially was going to draw a vase full of flowers with no background, and focus on realistically painting it. My painting was colorful but not as realistic as it would be if I drew it, and I decided that adding a setting would enhance the piece. I feel like the wood I did in colored pencil really contrasts with the bright roses and wall, and that really makes the piece.
I liked that this assignment was open-ended, because it gave me lots of room for choices. The downside to this is that I have lots of ideas, which I have to choose between for the final piece. Overall, I like having more options rather than being told what to do, because I like having creative freedom.
